TITLE/RANK: n/a

Dresses like a not-too-wealthy but not-too-poor Orlesian commoner—no mask, more subdued colors and silhouettes than the nobility, but tidy and vaguely, casually fashionable. Significant old blade-inflicted scar dragging from his right hip down his thigh. Carries himself quietly, but with confidence. Sits on tables even when there's a perfectly good chair right there.

Status

DIVISION: Scouting
POST: Master of Information
PROJECT(S): Clothilde

Bastien has been with Riftwatch since before it was Riftwatch, but the switch to the Scouting Division is pretty recent. He lives with Byerly Rutyer in a little house in Lowtown, positioned along a main thoroughfare between the docks and the stairs up to Hightown. He works outside of the Gallows a lot, but he usually comes to the office for at least part of the day if he's in town.

Reputation

Bastien is a bard (retired, he says, while continuing to do almost everything a bard does) from Val Royeaux, the best city in Thedas. He joined Riftwatch after the Battle of Ghislain, back when it was still an Inquisition outpost, under an assumed name that he's since abandoned. He was a member of the Diplomacy Division for the first five(!) years before switching to Scouting. On top of his usual work, he's edited a collection of rifter folklore and the diaries of Servana de Montfort for publication, and he prints the Hangman's Papers, Riftwatch's internal newsletter.

Outside of Riftwatch, he's involved with the local artist and philosopher crowd and prints an anarchist/proto-socialist tinged newsletter called The Quarry. He plays the cello and he's involved with Byerly Rutyer.

Around friends and colleagues, he's polite, friendly, chatty with people who want to chat, quiet with people who don't, and devoid of temper. In the field, he's cool-headed, breezily efficient, and a fabulous liar.

THE HANGMAN'S PAPERS

If your character would submit something for publication in The Hangman's Papers, a tract/pamphlet distributed to all Riftwatch members on a semi-regular basis, you can reply here to have it included in the post. Notes:

  • News, gossip, literary or theater criticism, announcements, political musings, poetry, etc., are all welcome.
  • Pieces might be printed without people's names attached—that's up to them—but only if Bastien does know who wrote them. Anything anonymously slipped under his door in the middle of the night will be kept in a folder until someone is willing to claim it.
  • If you'd like your character to be individually badgered to submit something, lmk.
  • It's common knowledge that Bastien is putting this together; it's also common knowledge that someone else originated the idea and is paying him to do it, but he won't say who.
  • Comments are screened to preserve IC anonymity, but who submitted what will be shared with Abby OOC and Wysteria IC as a matter of course, plus the Division Heads on request.

Actually writing the piece is optional. You can sum it up, like "a short paragraph requesting donations for refugees" or "a reprint of a letter from the Comte de Velun thanking Riftwatch for its assistance" or "a two-page litany of complaints about how easy it is to get lost in Kirkwall, with increasingly colorful metaphors." Or you can sum it up and also write out a paragraph or two you want to highlight. Or you can write the whole thing.

New issues come out approximately quarterly, give or take, and the approximate deadline for any issue is the same as the AC deadline. But it's super flexible so if there's ever anything you would like published at a particular time for plot/drama reasons, just say so and I'll make it happen.
